Extract 1:

Many experts believe that the modern diet is causing a dramatic increase in health problems. Highly processed foods, packed with sugar and unhealthy fats, are a key factor in rising levels of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. These foods are often convenient and inexpensive, making them appealing to busy consumers. However, doctors warn that their long-term effects can be devastating.

Questions:

1. According to the passage, why are highly processed foods popular? (Use your own words)

2. What health issues are linked to consuming these foods? (Use your own words)

Extract 2:

Social media platforms have transformed the way people interact, but they have also been criticised for their impact on mental health. Studies suggest that excessive use of these platforms can lead to feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Many users compare themselves to unrealistic portrayals of others, which can create a distorted view of reality and damage self-confidence.

Questions:

3. What negative effects can social media have on mental health? (Use your own words)

4. Why might social media give people a false impression of reality? (Use your own words)

Extract 3:

Climate change is causing unpredictable weather patterns across the globe. Rising temperatures have led to more frequent droughts in some regions, while others experience intense storms and flooding. Scientists warn that if urgent action is not taken, the effects will become even more severe, threatening ecosystems, agriculture, and human populations.

Questions:

5. What are some of the consequences of rising temperatures? (Use your own words)

6. What do scientists say will happen if action is not taken? (Use your own words)
